Mary appears to him sometimes when the light is just right, sometimes when he's driving or sometimes just when he's in his car. All the love he felt for her turns to saddness remembering what happened to Mary that hazy day. Could he have done anything different?
He saved her life Mary always thought, just being with him and being in love, riding around in the pickup from coast to coast - she would have followed him anywhere. Sometimes picking up something, sometimes dropping something off they were always moving and always laughing. They were happy in their simple life. They were not sure exactly what happened, it was just one moment, one wrong move and the pickup skidded off the road and plowed in the tree near the lake. Mary's head hit the window, Mary's blood flowed down the window as her hand reached for him fell limp to her lap.
She speaks to him sometimes, he hears here, she smiles at him always in the reflection of the window when the light is just right. He keeps her black mary jane shoes on the passenger side on the floor of his new pickup.
lyrics
sixteen years these mary-janes
followed your promises
up and down the east coast
in our beatup pickup
I was young and I was pretty - you said
and you were... the only man I’d had
and you were... and you were....
a son of a gun
it wasn’t just the money
it was a living, if living is a life
ahah
thats me in the window, thats me
that me in the window...
years flash by, tears run dry
i looked to the clouds and
saw my future in the sky
hear the words, you hide behind
nothing blue on the outside,
on the inside i’m slowly dying
ahah
thats me in the window, thats me
that me in the window...
they say I fell, they say...
I drowned or something
they say I wasnt happy, but
I was happy... with you
ahah
thats me in the window, thats me
that me in the window...
